The F1000 publishing model supports the robustness, quality, and transparency of research through rigorous editorial checks, open data, and open peer review.
F1000 publishing venues combine the speed of preprints with the benefits of full publication. Plus, authors are given autonomy throughout the entire publishing process, from what they choose to publish to which experts should be invited to review.
We believe that all valid research deserves publication, which is why we welcome a wide range of article types, confirmatory and negative results, and null studies. We accept articles based on research quality not research novelty.

How our publishing model works
Data preparation
Authors consult the open data policy of their chosen publishing venue to determine how to make their data accessible. Where data is associated with the article, authors are required to upload their data to a repository. If data falls under a policy exception, e.g., sensitive data, authors should plan for alternative sharing methods.
Some F1000 publishing venues require authors to share their data with peer reviewers and determine how they will share it with future readers of their published article.
Article submission
Authors submit their research via a single-page submission system. Our Editorial team then carries out a series of pre-publication checks to ensure your work meets our policies and guidelines, including any open data and ethical requirements. After passing this initial check, your article is accepted for publication.
Before publication, you’ll be asked to suggest five qualified experts to be invited to review your paper.
Publication
Once we have approved all five reviewers, your article is published rapidly on your chosen publishing venue, enabling immediate viewing and citation. Your work is available to read in full while it undergoes peer review.
Following publication and until the first peer review report is published, your article receives an ‘Awaiting peer review’ status.
Open peer review and user commenting
After your article is published, our Editorial team contacts your suggested reviewers, inviting them to assess your paper. Once your peer reviewers accept the invitation, open, transparent peer review takes place.
Peer review reports and reviewer names are published alongside the article, together with author responses and comments from registered users.
Article revisions
You can publish revised versions of your paper to address reviewer feedback or provide updates on your research at any time, even if peer review is not complete.
All versions of an article are linked and independently citable, making it easy for readers to navigate and cite any version.
Articles that pass peer review are indexed in external databases.
