The Japan Institutional Gateway is the world’s first Japanese-English dual language open research publishing venue, founded and supported by the University of Tsukuba

Researchers at Nagoya Institute of Technology (NITech) can now publish their work rapidly and with full transparency, as NITech becomes an affiliate of F1000’s Japan Institutional Gateway (JIG), following the lead of the University of Tsukuba.

The Gateway combines the benefits of rapid publication and post-publication peer review with mechanisms to assure quality and transparency; rigorous pre-publication checks, open peer review, archiving and indexing. All outputs published on JIG have open licenses, ensuring free access and maximizing the opportunity for use and re-use.

Research in all subject areas can be published on the Gateway. Researchers in humanities and social sciences can choose to publish their articles in Japanese or English, showcasing their work in a Scopus-indexed, international publishing venue in the language that best befits their work.

Launched with the support of the University of Tsukuba, JIG aims to increase the visibility of Japanese research across the globe. This mission reflects NITech’s long-standing strategy and programs that foster international collaboration and promote their students and research globally. NITech joins Saitama University, Tokai University, Tsukuba University of Technology, University of Fukui, University of Toyama, and Utsunomiya University, all of whom affiliated in 2023.

Rebecca Lawrence, Managing Director of F1000, commented:

“JIG is fast becoming an important home for impactful Japanese research, thanks to the range of institutions embracing its innovative approach to dual language scholarly communication. We are delighted Nagoya Institute of Technology has joined as an affiliate, enabling its researchers to benefit from rapid, open and transparent publishing.”

Prof. Junichi Yokoyama, Vice President of Nagoya Institute of Technology, stated:

“We believe that the Japan Institutional Gateway is a system that meets the needs of the open science era by facilitating prompt preprint processing, open peer review, and open data. We expect that our participation will bring a broader range of research outputs to our university.”

The JIG publishing model is also used on customized publishing Platforms provided by F1000 to major global funders, including the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Wellcome, and the European Commission. The JIG affiliation program continues to grow and F1000 welcomes expressions of interest from all Japanese research institutions.
